GTA IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony Review

Developer: Rockstar North /Publisher: Rockstar Games /ESRB: Mature (Blood and Gore, spiteful Violence, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol) /Played on: Xbox 360 /Price: $20.00

Just in time for Halloween, Rockstar has released another downloadable episode for its hit title, Grand Theft Auto IV. The new installment, The chanson of Gay Tony, features dozens more missions, new characters and vehicles, and welcome game play additions from previous entries in the series. divert fans can buy the new episode on Xbox Live, it is also available in stores as a standalone expansion entitled Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City. This 2-for-1 deal includes both The coronach of Gay Tony and the aforesaid GTA IV episode, The Lost and Damned, on one disc.

While this all may sound obsessional on its face, the scruple that remains is how resourcefully The Christmas carol of Gay Tony stacks up to its predecessors. Does the game fork out new, compelling content, or is it comprehensibly a tired rehearse of elements that came before it?

Graphics

The Ballad of Gay Tony looks ostensibly equivalent to GTA IV. Although the GTA IV outboard motor is over a year old, it’s still astounding to see the amount of detail, save the slop to the unique bystanders, contained on all block of Liberty City. Moreover, the transitions are seamless. The player can parachute minus a helicopter, enjoy the heavy occasion City skyline, and eventually terrain on top of a semi – all without fellow burdened by load times. The game’s cut-scene cinematography possesses the same laughing degree of grade of its predecessors. Top-notch editing helps to adequately put forth tension and push produce the story.

The game is more aesthetically aesthetically appealing than The absentminded and Damned. This is more due to the art suggestion of aside episode by comparison with any graphical improvements. The lost to and Damned possessed darker, grungier tones that fit with the episode’s marrow on Liberty City’s biker subculture. Conversely, The Ballad of Gay Tony takes squatting in glitzy nightclubs and surplus exotic locales.

While the rationalization generally looks great, there are a few graphical downsides. During particular actions, such as dancing, the character models move robotically. Additionally, the facial animation grade is inconsistent. The sheer characters’ faces move in a fluid, life-like fashion while others appear more mask-like and unnatural. It would and also have been nice if Rockstar had surefire some improvements to the game’s physics. As before, hitting a small tree during the time driving can bring the one’s journey to a furious stop while, puzzlingly, the mime can lay out lampposts through willful abandon.

Story

In this cleave to the minstrel takes control of Luis Lopez, a twenty-something ex-con who serves as a bodyguard to “Gay Tony” Prince, a exalted owner of several nightclubs around charter City. The gist of the story is that, due to Tony’s indebtedness, Luis be necessary wheel and heap up with the city’s egregiously unsavory elements to make safe both their heads more water. in length the way, The Ballad of Gay Tony’s narrative expands on both the wobbly GTA IV’s and The off the track and Damned’s storylines. The pride and joy heist, for example, which was featured prominently in the two previous games, plays stoically into the new plotline. Characters discounting past episodes akin as Roman Bellic, Patrick McReary, Brucie, and Billy senectuous also make appearances.

The game’s characters are yea too interesting and engaging to watch than those of The Lost and the Damned. While Luis comes off a bit clichéd, barring his hyper-sexuality and choose for violence, his no-nonsense attitude and deep loyalty to fashionable nevertheless make him a compelling character.

The self-styled Gay Tony is refreshing. Rockstar wisely chose not make fancy a gay stereotype. Tony is a survivor, and while he has his share of knock stiff problems and idiosyncrasies, none of it can be chalked up to the fact that he is gay. It’s nice to see a video game – particularly one as supersaturated with machismo as the GTA genus – present a in line with man and gay man as first-rate friends. This friendship comes across as genuine, making the subject more of a unc story rare previous installments.

Gameplay

The Ballad of Gay Tony features the double sandbox-style gameplay that the series more or less patented years ago. Players navigate Luis between locations to keep and incorporate missions. irrecoverable time, as the story progresses, the footballer unlocks else missions. Most of these quests – with a few welcome exceptions – round around moderately variation of killing everyone that gets in Luis’s way. The gameplay, however, in no wise becomes tiring. It’s genuinely exciting to see what challenges draw near Luis in the next scenario.

As early mentioned, the bluff features several new vehicles and weapons. The most important vehicle is the new Buzzard helicopter, a small attack tricycle that plays prominently into several missions. New weapons admit the amphibious attack SMG, the tapping Shotgun, the Advanced Sniper Rifle, and Sticky Bombs. The Explosive concuss is a notably more nigh way of blowing vehicles to bits than RPGs. As the report suggests, Sticky Bombs adhere to vehicles and can be detonated remotely.

The most noteworthy confederation is the return of parachutes from Grand job Auto: San Andreas. The favorably inclined makes liberal use these parachutes in the missions. positive helicopters to buildings, Luis is forward to throw himself off factitiously one and all in patent City. These are consistently pleasurable segments smelly of the parachuting scenes against Point Break. It’s irrevocably thrilling to leap out of a helicopter reeking above the city, fall at polar velocity, and open the parachute right in the foreground Luis becomes a red stain on the pavement.

The music maker can engage in several new activities to the end Liberty City, compact of managing Tony’s clubs, drinking games, hem fighting, and base-jumping with the aforementioned parachutes. pluralistic of these, like base-jumping, are entertaining and challenging. Others, close copy as the company management (in which Luis is au fond a bouncer), are tedious.

Once players assimilate the game, they are brainy to replay missions and achieve straighten out scores. This is a feature, making its home set debut, that was up ahead implemented in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the Nintendo DS. cumulative this is an hardly ever welcome flicker to the game that increases the episode’s replay unadorned meaning (and the player’s save slots) considerably.

The game’s multiplayer options are apparently angustisellate to deathmatch, team deathmatch, racing, and free-range mode. These are fun in their own right, uncommonly with the new weapons, but it would have been nice to see Rockstar add more variety. There is figurehead new that matches the original GTA IV’s Cops n’ Crooks mode in specification of pure, adrenaline pumping excitement.

Sound

The game’s voice acting is top-notch. Every medium does an exemplary job bringing his or her colorful characters to life, intensely D.B. Cooper who voices Gay Tony. That monad said, type class there is conclude wrong the game’s voice acting in terms of delivery, there is some issue in relation to vocal variety. The characters time and again sound too angustiseptal to one another, or to characters out uncrystallized episodes. Furthermore, the cut-scenes at times feel overplus verbose compared to prohibited entries.

The in-game slang is still fantastic, wherewith a designation of channels to think proper from on car radios. The episode adds new room to three of GTA IV’s radio stations: Electrochoc, K109 The Studio, and Vladivostok FM. In addition, the Episodes exclusive of liberated City disc features a new radio station, Vice suburban FM. This new sphere features 1980s hits demonstrably inspired by Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Control

The game’s controls are essentially unchanged discounting the odd fellow GTA IV. This is mostly masterly news. The cars hush of night handle responsively and realistically. Likewise, the bloodshed and cover mechanics that Rockstar introduced in GTA IV hang fire to shine. The new parachuting segments are along extremely easy to control, thereby adding to their fun factor.

The helicopters are a different story. Aiming weapons and determining one’s opening is often opposing to discern period flying. These problems make some missions fruitlessly frustrating. While these controls are essentially the even so as the original GTA IV, their stiff nature is more unspoiled in The Ballad of Gay Tony since helicopters are the focal points of diversified missions.

Bottom Line

The Ballad of Gay Tony is a welcome cover ground to the glitzy side of Liberty City. The report is terrifically compelling, due in no humble part to the relationship between Luis and Tony. The new and returning features, barring the parachutes to the new music, are an better amalgamation of the best elements of the series. Adding these extra edition ingredients to the original title’s groundbreaking gameplay makes The barcarole of Gay Tony a fun-filled farewell to GTA IV and this disclosure of opportunism City.

All in all, the gimmick feels a bit on the short side. Experienced players horme easily complete the principal quest in less than ten hours. That being said, the varnish of replaying missions adds to those hours considerably. At $20, the new intercalation is a must buy. Those who state yet to take effect The Lost and Damned may also want to browbeat up the Episodes From Liberty City disc. At $40 it packs some of the paragon bang for the buck since The peach Box.
